Cape Jervis is known as the ‘gateway to Kangaroo Island’. It’s a small coastal town located at the end of the Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia. Most people don’t bother visiting Cape Jervis itself because they’re here to see Kangaroo Island. I think that the area is actually is quite beautiful. Here are the best and most interesting places to visit in Cape Jervis!

1. Cape Jervis Lookout

I really enjoyed Cape Jervis Lookout, because of the view towards Cape Jervis Lighthouse. It’s located just off the main road into town and it’s essentially a gravel carpark. Don’t be afraid if you don’t have a 4WD, it’s fine for any car. The view any time day is beautiful, with deep blue colours in the middle of the day and some lovely warm colours at sunrise or sunset. You have to visit this lookout you’re in Cape Jervis, even if it’s just a few minutes!

2. Cape Jervis Countryside

The drive to Cape Jervis along the Main South Road is beautiful. I found a safe place to pull over and took a few photos of the fog. Since Cape Jervis is so close to the southern ocean the weather can change very quickly (which is great for landscape photography, but not so good for choosing what to wear!). There are only a few parts that are safe to pull over however, but in any case it’s a nice drive to roll down the windows and take in the scenery.

3. Cape Jervis Lighthouse

This interesting lighthouse was built in 1972. It actually has a cousin lighthouse in Cape Robe – they share the same design. Nearby is the original 1871 lighthouse location, and a helipad. There’s plenty of parking right next to the lighthouse. I wish it were open to visitors!

4. Starfish Wind Farm

This sustainable site is always uplifting to visit. There’s plenty of wind on the South Australian coast so it’s the perfect source of renewable energy. The farm provides electricity for 18,000 households. There’s a dirt road, called Yoho Road. Watch for the Starfish Windfarm sign as you’re driving along Main South Road.

5. Take the Ferry to Kangaroo Island

The Kangaroo Island Ferries leave from Cape Jervis. Here you can see the carpark and the cars lining up to get on the boat. In the distance on the horizon you can see Kangaroo Island itself! It’s not that far from Cape Jervis – it takes about 45min by ferry. There is so much to see on Kangaroo Island – Blogpost coming soon.
